Fun Facts
Gettysburg was partly filmed on the actual site of the 1863 battle, the first time the US National Parks Service ever allowed that to happen. The bulk of the scenes were filmed on a nearby farm. A re-enactment of the battle takes place on the weekend of July 4th every year (the actual battle ended on July 3rd, 1863) and many of the re-enactors returned for the filming of the movie.
Ted Turner, head of the studio has a cameo in the movie as does Ken Burns, the creator of an epic 11-hour PBS series on the Civil War.
